Many islands off Italy’s coast boast spectacular sandy beaches, fascinating historic sites and, naturally, some of the best seafood restaurants. What else would one want for an Italian perfect holiday? Here is our list of the most beautiful islands for your top custom Italy tours.
Capri
The rich and powerful of ancient Rome loved holidaying on the island. Today it continues to attract a glamorous jet-set crowd from around the world. Its picture-perfect chic town of Capri, the Blue Grotto and beautiful beaches are the biggest draws. History buffs will enjoy roaming among the ancient ruins of the Villa Jovis, the emperor Tiberius’ glorious summer retreat. The town of Anacapri does not get as many celebrities as Capri and offers more tranquillity and stunning sea views with dramatic rock formations of Faraglioni raising from the turquoise water.
Procida
Another jewel of the Bay of Naples, the island is lesser known than its neighbours Capri or Ischia and offers a more authentic atmosphere. Apart from lovely rocky beaches Procida has a beautiful crumbling abbey, Abbazia di San Michele, fortress, several picturesque villages with colourful old houses and many excellent restaurants. Several films have been shot here including Il Postino and The Talented Mr Ripley.
La Maddalena
Located between Sardinia and Corsica, the island is part of the Maddalena archipelago. It boasts some of the most stunning beaches in Italy that many compare to the Caribbean. Swimming, sailing, walking, visiting the ancient ruins, sipping an aperitivo or gorging on local delicacies are the main activities to enjoy here.
Panarea
The smallest of the Aeolian Islands in Sicily, Panarea is the favourite of many celebrities. No cars are allowed on Panarea, so tourists and locals move around on electric golf buggies and scooters. There are no electric streetlights on the island which makes it the perfect destination for romantic stargazing.
