It is hard to make a list of just a few beautiful towns and villages in Sicily as there are so many of them, each one better than the other. Here are just a few of them to inspire you to head on Best Private Italy Tours.
Erice
This fairytale-like town with massive walls that were built by the Elymians, an ancient people that lived here well before the Phoenicians and Romans. There are castles, cobblestoned alleys running up the mountain, a beautiful cathedral, elegant buildings and breathtaking sea views. In the Venus Castle you can see a tub where, according to a local legend, the goddess bathed in milk. You can take the cable car from Trapani to Erice to admire spectacular vistas of the surrounding area.
Montalbano Elicona
Dominated by a 14th century fortress, the medieval town is a maze of narrow streets with a charming atmosphere and historic buildings. Start from the well-preserved castle on the top of the ridge to admire the views over the surrounding mountains and valleys and work your way down, past lovely small churches and old palaces. A short distance from the village are the megalithic stones of Argimusco, which origins remain somewhat of a mystery.
Castelmola
The town attracts many visitors during summer months but you can always find a quiet corner to admire the views over the sea and Mount Etna looming at a distance. Climb up to a steep path to the ruined 16th century castle, stroll along shadowed narrow alleyways, pop in to cool dark old churches and sip a glass of wine in one of the town’s small bars. There are several excellent restaurants serving delicious local dishes.
Savoca
Another little gem of a town, Savoca boasts atmospheric ruins of an old castle, some beautiful small churches with sumptuous décor and a Capuchin monastery with a macabre collection of 32 mummified monks in catacombs. The town’s beautiful Palazzo Trimarchi was featured in Coppola’s famous film The Godfather.
